THE ROAD TO LONGSTONE

[11eRC] 120mm Artillery bombarding Westgate Keep

WAR 108, DAY 145, LONGSTONE, Westgate --- Around 2200 hours on day 145, Longstone's town base was seized by Caovish soldiers. This came after much fierce fighting over the township, still persistent as I write, Colonials fighting tooth and nail in the town’s outskirts.

Yet, a few days back, Longstone looked a long way from Kingstone. The fall of the town itself astonishing both camps in the conflict. Looking for answers, we met with Rat Cornu near the reconstituted townhall, a colonel and member of [11eRC]. We asked him how the front had progressed so rapidly in the wake of the last few days. His response was as follows:

“The capture of Kingstone the day before really helped the current offensive. It gave us ample time to soften up the Westgate Keep defences. But the concrete line was still a tough nut to crack. We had to use Cutlers, Satchel charges and artillery in order to breach the defences.”

As a matter of fact, a single line of concrete constituted the last line of defence protecting Westgate Keep. The Wardens at first had attempted to breach this with infantry, armed with Cutler RPG’s. This proved not enough firepower though, with the Colonials holding steadfast. In response [11eRC] and [λ] deployed several 120mm Huber Lariat guns. Acting in conjunction with infantry these efforts forced the legion back from their defensive works.

Once the Keep fell successive attempts were made by the Colonials to re-establish a continuous defensive line. Each failed though as the Warden’s pressed their offensive, with fighting eventually reaching Longstone. Here in the early hours of day 146 the Warden’s would converge on the township. Warden gunboats laid waste to the seaport, while a combined effort of armour, artillery and infantry would raze the Colonial townhall. In the onslaught of this a fierce bayonet battle would break out in the ruins of the Colonial command centre.

Ultimately though this valiant last stand failed, with Warden troops moving in and establishing themselves. In the outskirts of the city now a scene of sparse fighting and Warden patrols we interviewed a Warden captain. He provided strong optimism in the Caovish army’s ability to seize the entire region stating, “The real defences were in Westgate… and when that fell it looked dire for the whole region” (ref of captain if possible).

Nevertheless Colonial spirits remain high. Interviewing a legionnaire by the name of Frozi, when asked about whether the Mesean’s would lose the region he quipped, “Ha hah ha over my fucking cool dead body.” Following this interview Johansen and myself found ourselves separated as fighting intensified once more. As I write this the Legion still holds enclaves within Westgate, and although the Warden’s may have prevailed at Longstone only time will tell if they’ll prevail over all of Westgate.
